On Monday, we were excited to share the brilliant, multiaward-winning musical Next to Normal with our Year 12 and 13 students in a special screening organised at Holy Trinity. Next to Normal is a rock musical that follows Diana Goodman, a suburban mother grappling with worsening mental health and the ripple effects her condition has on her husband and children. Written by Brian Yorkey, with music composed by Tom Kitt, the show explores themes of mental illness, grief, and family resilience. Since its Broadway debut in 2009, the musical has earned major accolades, including three Tony Awards—among them Best Original Score—and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it one of the few musicals to receive that honour. For our aspiring performers at HTSPAA, being able to watch such a powerful piece of theatre is a brilliant opportunity and allows them to see how the Performing Arts can be used to explore all aspects of the human condition.

Annie
This week in Performing Arts, we had an amazing evening of music on Tuesday, featuring all the Year 11 musicians and Year 12/13 Musical Theatre and Music students. There was a huge variety of performances from all three year groups, and it was such a pleasure to see the culmination of all the hard work and rehearsal on stage in front of an audience of proud family and friends. In particular, it was wonderful to see some final performances from both Year 11 and Year 13 students, who will be moving on from HTS later next term. We wish them all the very best in their future musical endeavours and thank them for their huge contribution to the Performing Arts at HTS.

On a dreary and rainy February evening, the audience pour in from the dark and eagerly take their seats. The Main Hall of The Holy Trinity Church of England Secondary School has been in every sense transformed. No longer are we in West Sussex. The sight that unfolds is a run down orphanage in 1933's New York City. The sleeping orphans arrive, “It’s a hard knock life” is chanted as a war cry and the story begins. One of the first things you notice about Annie as a musical is it is jam packed with incredible characters and all the students passionately bringing them to life. From the very beginning, Lakeisha Wood as Miss Hannigan captures the stage with vulgar humour and cruel taunting. Her performance is so funny and exciting that, as an audience, fingers are always crossed that Miss Hanagan will make an appearance in the scene. Another standout performance is Harry Madel as the billionaire with a heart, Mr Warbucks. With subtle acting and an incredible American accent, Harry is a confidence and quick-witted voice on stage. Now this review would be entirely redundant if I did not mention the titular character herself. Millie Knight as Annie is a powerhouse. Through Millie’s combination of incredible singing, hilarious timing and the kind of acting that wears its heart on its sleeve, we as an audience root for Annie the entire play. In many ways, the most encouraging thing about Millie’s performance is she understands when to draw focus and when to let other actors shine. Annie is not a show that can rely on three actors alone. Its themes of community, found family and resilience during times of hardship are reliant on a strong ensemble. From orphaned girls to NYC passersby, from the Hooverville underclass to the staff of the White House - the ensemble is always working together with support and joy. The choruses are belted, the lines bounce with energy and the two hours fly by. Every student that steps on that stage has a look of pure happiness and pride and that is the most inspiring thing to see. A musical is by no means the responsibility and the product of the performers alone and there is a diligent army of other creatives in the background maintaining the fantasy of the musical. They are lighting designers, set designers, musical direction, costume and make-up team, stage hands, sound designers and front of house to name some. You are all wonderful and deserve ever clap the audience give. Of course it must be said that without the vision, dedication and passion of the HTS Performing Arts Academy, there is no Annie. To you - your students are so incredibly lucky to be given the opportunity and endless support. Annie has their final show on Friday night! If you haven't been to see it yet, you have one final opportunity. And if you have been intrigued by the spotlight, the solos and the sets, why not get involved when the next production is announced? I am certain that you won't regret it!

Hadestown Trip
We have had wonderful final festive week in Performing Arts with a trip to see the amazing ‘Hadestown’ at the Lyric theatre in London. Our Year 12 and 13 PA students were joined by Year 11 students who have shown excellence in the Performing Arts this year to give them a taste of life in Sixth Form at HTSPAA. We started with some food and then a walking tour in London of the beautiful Christmas lights before heading to the theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. Our seats in the Grand Circle gave us an amazing view of the incredible musicians and performers in Hadestown. A beautiful blend of the Ancient Greek myths of Hades/ Persephone and Orpheus/Eurydice with amazing music inspired by New Orleans Jazz and Blues. The storytelling was guided by an incredible Hermes and the three Fates. Along with the ensemble their harmonies and acting through song took us on the journey of the four central characters. As the plot built to the song we all knew and loved ‘Wait for Me’ our students were moved to tears and plans to book tickets again! We hope you all have a moment to experience the Performing Arts over the holidays.

Cabaret Night
We celebrated our 7th HTSPAA Cabaret evening with an enthusiastic audience of family, friends and staff. This was an amazing evening of performances from all Year 12 and 13 Performing Arts students who study with us at HTSPAA. There was a huge variety of works included in the evening from all pathways (Acting, Musical Theatre, Music and Theatre Production). From Ancient Greek Theatre to modern Musicals, the evening was an incredible showcase of everything the students in our Performing Arts department have created and succeeded with. Most of all we are so proud of the absolute teamwork they displayed in preparing for the evening and throughout the process they have embodied our three key tenets - Independence, Professionalism and Creativity. Well done to all our performers and tech team.

Unit 4 Final Performance
It has been a busy week in Performing Arts with Year 13 students completing their Unit 4 Combined Arts exam on Tuesday. Their creativity and enormous energy was a testament to the hard work and preparation process which they have dedicated to over the last few months.
